1.2 History of Harold Electric Company

William Henry Harold (WHH) started Harold Electric Company in 1920 as a motor rewind shop in his garage on Birch Street. He was an inventor who received his electrical engineering degree in 1905 from the University of Kansas. Sometime early in his career he built what may have been one of the first electric welders, and around 1927 developed what were possibly the first commercially available pipe thawers. The business eventually included pump and electrical work and moved to Main Street, where the parking lot of Seafirst Bank is today. About 1929 the company moved again to larger quarters on Alder Street. WHH's son, Ray Harold, who received his electrical engineering degree from Washington State College (Now Washington State University) in 1942, brought factory training and work experience from York and G.E. when he took over the business in 1952. The present office and shop on Rose Street was built in 1969. The company was now also involved in refrigeration, HVAC, lawn sprinkler systems, and central-pivot irrigation controls manufacturing. The Metal Shop was acquired in 1972 to build Ag-Aire tractor cabs, pressurizers and a/c systems. Over time, a catalog selling Ag-Aire and other items for resale grew. Ray's son, Jim, took over the shop in 1995. All three managers earned Electrical Engineering degrees and worked in that field before entering the company.

We have been fortunate to have work for us some of the most skilled people in their fields over the years. Some retired and current personnel have been with the company for over 25 years. We value their experience and committment.

Today, we are diversified and looking ahead to new opportunities. Present divisions include:

- Service work for residential, commercial, industrial, and agricultural applications, including Monitor heaters, Clean Burn and other waste oil heaters, special electrical equipment, motors, generators, and certified Draeger Ignition Interlock Systems installer.
- Sales of off-road and heavy-duty air conditioning systems, components and tools, and soundfoam for mobile air conditioning.
- Sales of refrigerants for mobile, military and other uses.
- Manufacture of hay knotter fans, pressurizers and waste oil heater kits.
- Catalog sales and distribution throughout the Northwest region and nationwide.
